so fun went to vegas again! it was a great time for the most part. artist ian mailhot built us an awesome booth, pinski and seth flew out and derek albeck drove out with marco zamora from los angeles. there were alot of cool lines at the show including beta unit. they are the guys from maek gallery, where we are hosting the third stop of the white album show on september 15th. the turn out for the vegas white album show was great. thankyou to everyone who showed up! thankyou to derek for painting the giant blue penis on the wall and almost getting us beat up by the maintinence man, haha. also thankyou to the dickheads that stole art from the show. i hope they trip and fall on top of it and it stabs them through the chest. i will post some photos from the white album opening later this week. hope all is well

fun goes to portland for "home away from home"

here are some pics from the "home away from home" art show on aug. 2nd and lots of other stuff to look at from the week leading up to it. a big thanks to backspace gallery for letting us build a permanent tree house in there space, thanks to derek albeck and nick for doing the bulk of the work on the tree house, thanks to seth and tim for putting the show idea together and letting everyone stay at there house, thanks to rebecca for making a full moon cake and potato soup and bringing awesome snacks for the 15 hour drive, another thanks to derek for switching off with me and making the drive possible, and thanks to dave wien for letting me hang out on his roof with the great view. all together i had a great time and i hope that everyone involved in the show had good times as well. the show will be up for six weeks so if you are in downtown portland at all, then be sure and stop by and give it a looksy. oh yeah, i saw a stripper come out of a party at 8am and try to ride a skateboard in high heel shoes. it was great to watch, especially the part where she ate shit and broke her arm. these shots were all taken by rebecca urias. she is amazing and so are these dang pics she took. they were so nice looking that i decided to give them there own post, that way she will get the credit for having the "cool shots". these were all taken during the set up of the show. the shots in the forrest are my personal favorite. we took a chainsaw and same hatchets and chopped up this uprooted tree that had fallen over deep into the wilderness. we all tried our best to get rebecca to try the chainsaw, but she seemed much more comfortable with the hatchet for some reason? over the duration of this trip i was lucky enough to spend some serious time with both rebecca. she should be doing a show at the pony club gallery in portland sometime this winter so be on the lookout and rumor has it that she might soon have a website too!

fartminusf was lucky enough to sit down with the world famous intern at the office in portland last month. i was in pdx for an art show fun was having and thats when i spotted him. we spoke of life and Norwegian fishing techniques. he bought alot of beer for the friends united party, i told him to save the recite and i would pay him back. i never did. i felt bad. i still feel bad. the intern is a small piece of heaven that fell down into our laps. here is his interview. it is boring as shit, but what do you expect from the fartminusf?

Fartminusf- how many chicks have you been with?

Intern- you meen like been with intimetly, like BEEEN WIITH!?

Intern- um, well, we are going to have to say zero

its the 4th of july and i should be at the beach chasing babes, but instead i am in my room posting on fartminusf. i would truly like to get up and start my day, but the weight of hungoverness i am carrying on my shoulders makes it impossible to exit the bed. i know that none of this pertains to the show at maek gallery, so lets get to business. last saturday the guys at beta unit invited me out to check out there new show, "what goes around comes around", so me and mr riley cooper road our bikes 20 miles in 110degree heat to the train station. riley is freshly 18 years old and he already has a full beard. he also packs all the orders over here at fun so that makes him a double threat. just in case you dont know, beta unit is a new clothing brand based out of encinites, or is it spelled encinetas, shoot i am a bad speller. anywho, there office space is split into a half office half gallery space and thats where you get maek. if you want to learn more about beta unit or maek gallery then check out there sites, they are good guys. www.betaunit.com www.maekgallery.com

i know i am a bit late on posting this, but the photos from the show got stuck on the camera and my roommate shannon had to hack them off of the damb thing. im starting to think that the terminator movies might actualy be a preview of the future? think how screwed we would be if we couldnt access electricity for a week. its time we all go out and catch up on our nature skills. it took a week just to get some pictures off a stupid camera. im going back to film. sorry its late and im cracked out on caffine. im not even going to spell check this post, so let me know if there are any typos. thanks to everyone over at the office that helped out and made everything flow nicley. big thanks to kevin for letting us stay so late and for putting up with our drunkness. another big thanks to pinski and seth for taking care of all the art before the show. when i fist got to the office i thought pinski wanted to fight me because i didnt bring his pieces back from socal, but it turns out he was just being a dick. seth said he could tell i was scared. overall the show went well, but i guess theres a guy that works at the office who has art shows and he fills the place alot more then we did and his art is alot better too, if you ever stop by ask him and he will tell you. a big thanks to the intern for buying beer too

Seeing as we are based in Oklahoma, we thought we would take the "one off t-shirt design" thing to a new plain (pun indented) by utilizing a few ingredients which seem to be plentiful in these here parts, like guns and land. We have our share of UFO's too but non were availble for this shoot. Oh and of course dry ice bombs filled w/ RIT dye, they were a pretty critical part of the process...

yep the trick is to shoot the bombs full of dye before they explode, but the longer you wait the more the pressure builds which makes for a better application of dye to fabric.

I think we lost only 2 shirts to buckshot overload.

Anyway we made a short art documentary out of the process which is in the final edit stages, and I'll share that as soon as we can get it online.

In the meanwhile here are some pics.

pinski and i have been very busy all month doing an installation in a warehouse with about 20 other artist. the two of us built small huts with wood that we have collected over the past year or so in portland.

the 50,000 square foot warehouse is being torn down and replaced with condos very soon so the show closes thursday may 21st.

if you live in or near portland come hangout for the closing party, it should be alot of fun.

And, lastly, I'm dealing with artists who are imitating mine and other's work. They say imitation is a form of flattery but when people are doing stuff very similar in style to what you've been doing for years and they're selling it, it's more of a slap on the face. I am not naming any names but I've seen alot of imitation the past couple of years and it's getting worse. The good thing is that for some reason people tend to copy the stuff I was doing right out of school- sun rays (hehe which I copied from Alex Gross), robots, boxes with wings, etc. It still sucks. I don't know if the artists are to blame or the galleries that show them. Or it could be the buyers who are supporting this. So here's some advice for everyone...

Artists- if you find yourself with a lack of ideas or have trouble finding your style, DO NOT take the easy path. Don't look at who's successful and steal their ideas. Do not copy them. Do not imitate them. This might help you sell some paintings, you may even sell out a show or two. But in the long run it will come back to bite you in the ass. You'll be but a flash in the pan. A one hit wonder. If you are a serious artist and you make art because you have to, it's in your soul, it's in your heart, you will eventually find your own style. I'm not saying it will be easy. It takes sacrifice, dedication, and experimentation. And once you think you found your style, throw it all away. Because your shit will get stagnant if you don't keep evolving. The artists who are copying will not be around in a couple years. Watch. *Note- it's alright to be a little derivative right out of school, no one can help that. But if you're out of school for a while and selling your paintings and deep down you know it's not totally original, then it's time to refocus and get onto a better path.

And..

Galleries- You have a responsibility to show original work. When you show work that is overly derivative, it cheapens your gallery and the entire "scene". This scene is small. Really small actually. If you are showing work in this genre you should have at least an understanding of who the artists are, what their work looks like and where they have shown. You have to have the backbone to be able to tell artists to come back in a year with new work if it's derivative. Galleries used to be tougher. It was special if your work got in. It meant you were making original, thought provoking work. Realistically not everyone is going to be able to show Viner or Camille Rose Garcia, but that doesn't mean you should find someone who is making similar work. There are tons of young artists out there who are deserving, hard working, eager and super original. Go find them. Promote them. Teach them. There are tons of young artists out there who are copying. They will come to you. Educate them. Push them. Be honest with them. They will return better artists.

And...

Buyers- You're gonna hopefully buy a piece of art because you love something about it. Investing in art is not bad either. I hope you also really research the artists you are interested in (especially if you're looking at it as an investment). It's hard to keep track of everything but try to stay informed. Most of the artists being copied have shown at some time at La Luz de Jesus (now Billy Shire Fine Art), Jonathan Levine Gallery, Merry Karnowsky, New Image Art, BLK/MRKT, etc. They have higher standards and will never show anything derivative. Research some of these galleries that have been around for a while (there are more, don't limit to those I mentioned), get back copies of Juxtapoz, Giant Robot, check out American Illustration, there are also some great books on the subject. Most artists also have their resume's listed on their websites. In short, do your research. Unless you don't mind buying work that may be derivative, and that's your prerogative (cue Bobby Brown here).

So that's my little rant about this situation. I've talked to a lot of people about this and everyone agrees that it is getting to be a widespread problem. Any ideas on this? What are your thoughts?

derek got an interview with fecal face a bit ago. i forgot to post it the other day when i first saw it, so check it out cause it might be gone soon. i read through it and he sounds really smart. you know who else was smart, this ritch swedish guy with the last name nobel who invented dynamite. then after inventing it the guy felt really bad for inventing something that killed people. So to make himself feel better, he dedicated the rest of his life to awarding those that benefit man kind. hence, the nobel prizes. the most recognizable of course is the nobel peace prize. albert einstein won one for physics and adolph hitler was nominated for the nobel peace prize in 1938, so i guess its safe to say they have had some hits and misses. derek should win a nobel prize for being a great dude. derek will also be working with f.u.n. to help put together some of the art shows for 2008 so start shmoozing him. derek and rebecca will be having a show on the 14th at project gallery.

my turtle (Seymour) woke up a few days ago from his 3 month winter napping session. Id forgotten what a bastard Seymour is and how his life’s mission is to get away to see the worlds treasures or get squished by a car. today he escaped from his backyard wonderland and it looked as if he had finally gotten the best of me. i made signs and put them up and down my street that said "lost turtle, if found please call.....etc." a child from the catholic school across the street laughed at the signs in my hands and said " you look like your going to cry, haha your wearing a pink shirt(i was wearing a pink shirt, but its a muted pink, closer to off white then pink if i had to pick it myself), haha you lost your turtle are you gonna cry now!?" i turned to the child and remembering my days in private school responded with "haha you have to wear dress pants to school every day, even when its 110 degrees out and your chubby haha". all the children laughed at the boy and started calling him fat. it was great. soon after that a swedish lady a few doors down saw my sign and took me up the street where an old man with a big white beard and glasses lives. he found the bastard Seymour a few hours prior in my street and returned him to me. both the turtle and the fat little boy caught me off guard today, but in the end i kicked both of their asses (not literally of course, although i thought about it with the kid) life is really funny sometimes.

FUN GOES TO THE NORTH WEST!!!

this nice girl had an art show and showed us naked pictures of herself

yup, its true. we went up. i guess its not that big a deal, but i thought i would try and pull everyone into reading the post with the whole "!!!!" header. eric v and myself hit the seatle scene for the smart show put on by jason bowes and his wife. it was a great show and they bought us lots of snazzy food which was great. i also brought eric v (our in house graphics guy). eric had never been this far from his home in long beach in his whole life. no joke, the dude is my best buddy but he is the hermity hermit of all hermits. it was great to see him out of his sunny so cal bubble hes always lived in. the guy didnt even bring a jacket, haha. after the show we headed down to portland and stayed with pinski in his awsome new house. we went out, saw some cool art in downtown, saw dudes riding there bikes in full on rain, saw a girls boobs, saw a cool french bulldog puppy, saw seth neefus dance (its awsome), saw the grenade headquarters and im sure we saw a bunch of other great things that i cant remember right now. now that i gave you the highlights, let me give you the low points of the trip. i got jumbled on the drive home (this happens alot) and i drove eric and myself an hour in the wrong direction, so we missed our flight and had to spend the night in seatle airport. if youve spent the night in an airport before then you know how shitty it is, but at least i finaly got to see the sience of sleep which was great!!! hope everyone is doing well. keep posting assholes!!!

i know its been a while since dereks show and this should have been posted like a week ago, but we have been up in the north west working on the new line up of friends united network tees so i big SORRY to derek for lagging.

the turn out for the show was awsome. derek is a great guy and you could tell that he has both talent and a good head on his shoulders which tends to create a sort of magnet affect on people. if you know derek then you are aware that he is more humble then the average humble guy. If you get a chance to stop by the store then do it. the piece in the front window of the store is amaizing. there is also a piece inside that derek collabed with his buddy jawn that i wish i had a shot of. great show dude

from munich to chamonix to paris, we experienced so many amazing things. so here is a little preview of some wild times and drawings that happened on our journeys through the old land of europe.

i am not sure if this cab ride home was the same night as the giant bong like beer, but pinski was passing out pretty often.

from the Louvre to drinking a bottle of wine at the Eiffel Tower we saw so much history and also created some along the way.

on trains and in bars Levins, Pinski and I found some time to draw, paint, and play exquisite corpse.

it is good to be back in portland!

When I was really young my dad used to tell me that laughter is very important! After going to art college where I thought I would be happier and have much more fun than being in Denver going to a regular school learning about boring things like math, literature, law, business, medicine, or any other boring subject. I decided screw it I am going to go to NY I don't know anyone I don't know where any thing is and I am going to leave all my friends here in Denver and meet new people in NY. The school that I wanted to go to in NY is very expensive and has a lot of kids interested in art that go to the school. The first year was very good a lot of experimenting. I was able to paint draw sculpt make movies hang out with friends skateboard meet tons of kids. It was great!
The second year I wasn't able to hang out with friends very much anymore and I had to paint a specific way and draw a specific way. And all my classes were required except I could choose a few of them. The difference I noticed between the two years is the second year was way more serious. For example in my class principles of illustration my teacher asked us to make an illustration that had to be sad. I made a painting of a man getting kicked in the face by a boy with spikes on his shoes. She told me to bring that piece home and make another one only the one she wanted me to make had to be sad not funny at the same time. I thought a lot about this and I decided that the only way I could make a piece that was very sad was to make a photo realistic piece that was about a very serious topic. Or take a photo of something very sad. I began to paint as I painted I became very into my piece and I began to feel very sad. When I showed it to my teacher I was sad and when she looked at the piece she said very good. Although she wasn't as sad as I was when looking at the piece. When I got home that day from school I began to paint another sad image. When I talked to my mom on the phone she said how are you and I said not so good. Maybe I didn't explain to her why or even knew why but she began to worry. As the weeks went on I became more and more sad and didn't even know exactly why all I could think about was how terrible the world was and how terrible my situation was. I was angry and sad all the time. I decided fuck it I am going to switch majors to fine art. I did and then I switched right back because earlier that day I had talked to the chair of my program about how I felt and he said that I should stay in illustration because I will be able to learn a lot more. He showed that he disliked the idea of fine art by telling me how bad it was. I became very confused and then this time I began to panic I couldn't decide what to do and I stopped eating properly and stopped being around other people as well as stopped doing art. I wasn't myself at all. As the weeks went on I talked to my parents and my friends and didn't do a lot of my homework and I missed a bunch of days of school. I needed a break from everything so I could think. I still wasn't feeling much better when I began to think about what my dad said how he wanted to keep things simple. I had always said when he said that why keep things simple? Life isnt that simple and why not challenge yourself and sort of argue with what he said. Although the idea began to make sense, perfect sense. I tried it I said, “fuck all this crap in my room and all of my files on my computer and all the things I need to do I will just do what I need to do today”. Then the next day I did the same thing only I tried doing a few more things. This went on for the next few days and I began to feel much better…

Okay let me start off by saying I've really enjoyed all that I've seen on this blog. Thanks for sharing and keep it coming!!!

Oh yes and hello there I'm tribalbot, and I'm based out of Oklahoma City, which since I moved back here (about 3 yrs ago) from Eugene OR I've found that OKC seems to have a sister city in Portland. Lots of peeps from here seem to be head up to Portland... felt compelled to share that observation for some reason. It may mean something to you one day if not today.

So I know Oklahoma City is not the first place that pops into most peeps minds when they think of art explosions, but the art scene here in OKC is blowing up and I'll be posting bits here as they happen. You can see more of my work over here.

Some friends and I have recently started a new gallery here in town and our first opening is Feb 9th. The Friskee Gallery is where my next show will be so in the meantime I've posted some shots from my opening last weekend, a group show featuring J. Michelle Martin-Coyne, Tony Westlund, and myself.

The show is up through mid April and the opening was one of the best I've experienced yet, super positive energy in the space. Might have had something to do w/ all the colors oozing from the walls. That and X Rated Vodka sponsored the show, so the warm fuzzies might have had something to do w/ the Vodka flow.

last week i dropped off a few paintings with the nice guys at project gallery for a group show on the 20th. here is a part of one of the paintings that i turned in

it is of me running away from a bible study when i was seven, it is a long strange story, but a good one!

the tiny town with egrets coming out of chimneys instead of smoke.
then i met up with sean who was nice enough to let me stay at his house for a few days to get ready for the show i am in at denm (also on the 20th!) with the incredibly lovely and talented juliana swaney and i got to paint a wall.

while all you suckas out there were sleepin last friday me, ian, and the goff went out and road with the midnight ridazz!!! it was so freaking cold that night that we thought we would be the only ones,( 25 diggies to be exact). to our surprise 200 or so people still came out to ride in the freazing cold. In the end it was a great ride with lots of down hills and even more whiskey. oh yah, jeremy from the 222 gallery almost beat up some chads and then he spit on there car.

so jayk and i went out to the desert the other day to check on some fun accounts and realized there is some real wierd stuff out in the sandy regions of southern california(as you can see by the photos). At the same time the desert offers some real treasures like "big mommas soul food" in cathedral city. they make real soul food with all the best stuff you can possibly imagine, like candy yams, hot wings, collard greens, and mac n cheese. The owner is the biggest dude i have ever seen. if you are ever in the area, give it a chance

The venue is packed with people that actually care about the stuff I do instead of famous celebrities and the “image” that society is too in tune to to tune into the bums that are shivering as they pass by. How about the regulars with a lot of good to provide, but nobody knows them so why give them a chance. I’m here to make my friend Wally Haynes a celebrity, so people actually see him and say hi not to just pass by as another quiet day of his passes by. Do people really care if Ben Affleck just went to the hospital due to a headache? The neighborhood intellect passed away due to an empty pocket and a broken soul, unseen. These people should be seen, heard, loved and talked to. With my offerings to the world I exhibit such people in a true, trendless, and simple spotlight through many forms of visual piles of poo. After six years of spray-paint dust living in my lungs I have formulated a plan to obstruct the public’s view in as many ways possible.
